Application and interview

When you put in your application, we’ll review it by looking at your qualifications and your personal statement. If your application demonstrates that you have the potential to train successfully, including a high standard of written communication, we’ll invite you to interview with us.

Top tips for writing your personal statement:

1. Clearly demonstrate your passion for teaching – make sure to include clear motivations for wanting to train to become a teacher.

2. Don’t miss anything relevant out – if you have voluntary experience, make sure to list this in the job history section of the form.

3. Start with your most recent/relevant work or voluntary experiences and skills developed, then work backwards from there.

4. Give examples – when writing about your skills and experience, give examples of these, how you have used them, and how they relate to teaching.

5. Proof it! Make sure you proofread your statement before submitting, as it is easy to miss something. Getting someone else to read your statement can also be beneficial.

Interviews will usually be held online and will include one NTTC team member and an expert in the subject/age group you have applied to train. The interview will involve activities designed to test your suitability to teach. Your interview will consist of a pre-prepared task, followed by a round of formal questions to help us decide if you are suitable for teacher training.

  • Primary applicants will be asked to prepare the reading of a book to a class of their choice.

  • Secondary applicants will be asked to prepare a presentation to explain how they would use an item of their choice to teach an aspect of their subject.

As you are applying for a place on a course and not a job, we are looking for potential for success on our programme. We strongly believe that interviews should be a two-way process, so we aim to give you as much information about NTTC as possible and answer the questions we know you will have.

We will make and communicate our decision within 48 hours, pending satisfactory references and any other conditions.
