Our Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeships programme will see you get involved with school life from day one, with your employer and us supporting your training throughout.

The entry requirements for Teaching Apprenticeship programmes are exactly the same as all graduate teacher training routes. However, apprenticeships are suited to those who already have strong experience working with children in the age range for which they wish to teach.

To be ready for an apprenticeship, you will have already secured employment or come to an agreement with a school who want to employ you and support you throughout your training year.

Programme overview

The Apprenticeship takes up to four school terms (12 – 15 Months) to complete. As part of your programme, you will receive access to the following during your training:

  • Training in School – 80% of your time will be spent in the classroom gaining practical experience and skills supported by your school based mentor. This will involve subject knowledge, lesson observation, team teaching, solo-teaching and learning support across at least two key stages. You will gain experience in at least two academies within the partnership.

  • Professional Development Programme – 20% of your course time will be spent off-the-job training back at college. This will be a mixture of professional development training sessions, conferences and opportunities to engage with our partner secondary schools and sixth form.

Assessment

To successfully complete the course, you will be required to:

  • keep a Professional Practice Portfolio providing evidence of personal progress throughout your programme. The Portfolio should also contain reflection on academic issues and reading of relevant published educational research.

  • participate fully in the life of your placement school, keeping a record of your progressive teaching experiences and evidence through a reflective journal

As part of the apprenticeship course, you will be assessed at two points:

  • First Assessment - at the end of your third term, you will be assessed, using evidence from your observations and Professional Practice Portfolio, against the Teachers’ Standards. This will form your recommendation to gain Qualified Teacher Status.

  • End-Point Assessment (EPA) - during your first half term as an Newly Qualified Teacher, you will be assessed externally. This assessment will consist of a formal observation and professional discussion.

What qualification will I gain?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status by the Department for Education, which allows you to teach in all Maintained schools in England & Wales.

Fees and funding

As an employed apprentice, your employer is responsible for covering your course fees and salary, which must be in line with the unqualified teacher salary scale.
