Norfolk Teacher Training Centre Highly Ranked in The Good Teacher Training Guide

The latest rankings from The Good Teacher Training Guide show that Norfolk Teacher Training Centre (NTTC) is among the top teacher training providers in England for trainees successfully securing teaching jobs.

NTTC, which opened in Norwich in September 2014, is listed in The Good Teacher Training Guide 2017 as being one of just 17 teacher training providers with a 100% record of final year trainees (in 2014-15) being employed as teachers in 2015-16.

As well as being great news for the first 19 NTTC graduates embarking on their rewarding new careers in teaching, this statistic is also good news for teacher recruitment in the region as 18 out of the 19 NTTC graduates took up teaching jobs in the East England.

NTTC’s contribution to addressing the teacher recruitment shortage in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire was recognised by Ofsted in January 2017, when inspectors reported that NTTC is making a “strong contribution” to supporting teacher recruitment in the region.

This positive impact is set to continue, as NTTC figures show that its trainees from 2015-16 also had a 100% success rate in securing teaching jobs, with 19 out of 23 taking up posts at schools in the region.

As well as reporting on progression into teaching jobs, The Good Teacher Training Guide also provides an overall ranking of teacher training providers based on their Ofsted grade, the level of prior qualifications of their trainees, and numbers achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

NTTC also scores impressively on these rankings, appearing as the top ranked provider of teacher training in Norfolk. Overall, the Centre is ranked 59th out of the 148 providers of initial teacher education in England.

One of the NTTC graduates from 2014-15 is Aaron Piggott, who teaches PE and is Head of Year 11 at UTC Norfolk.

Mr Piggott says that the option to train through the School Direct route, which sees trainees gain on the job experience for 4 days a week for the whole of the school year, was one the things that attracted him to NTTC:

“It was hands on, you are learning on the job. The experience is brilliant because you are thrown in at the deep end, but that is exactly what you need. You are doing the job that you are going to be doing for the rest of your career from the get-go.”

Reflecting on his year as an NTTC trainee, Mr Piggott added: “It is a tough year, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a nice balance of being in school 4 days a week, supported by your mentor, and then reflecting on theory and being in the classroom with the other trainees one day a week. I feel that I’ve established myself now as a teacher and now I want to carry that on in my new role as a head of year.”
